After obtaining a Ph.D. in wood chemistry in 1994 in France, he worked in industrial research in the Swedish forest based industries until 1998.
He joined the European Commission in May 1998, where he started as a project officer for research in renewable materials, energy from biomass, wood products, pulp & paper and chemical engineering. He has been Head of Unit “Scientific Culture and Gender”, which is part of the Research Directorate General of the European Commission since October 2006.
