The social program provide an additional opportunity for the participants to exchange with their colleagues and extend the network.

In addition, industrial visits and excursions are organised primarily for the participants, out of the schedule of the conference sessions. They are proposed on the "Tour and culture" program and you can book your personal selection on the “Accommodation and Tour reservation” form which is to be found at the "Accommodation" index .

The "Tour and culture program" is completed with activities taking place during the conference and mainly proposed for the accompanying persons.

Industrial visits (free)



Several industrial visits are being prepared. Two are presently confirmed (TRANSPOLE and SEVELNORD) and if you are interested,you have to book them on the "Accommodation and Tour reservation” form.


For the others which will appear progessively, the registration will be done by mail sent to the secretariat.



  • TRANSPOLE in Lille

Friday 18 July, 14:30 –15:30 and 16:00-17:00

group of 25 persons maximum


With Transpole, Lille has a very wide-ranging public transport system with bus lines, tramway lines and 2 underground lines equipped with the first automatic metro in the world , the VAL (Light Automatic Vehicle) since 1983. It is the longest automatic network in the world with a very high frequency (1 metro / per minute at busiest hour). The metro proposes multiple services and is fully accessible to disabled persons.
You will visit the working and security control centre of this city transport network.


  • SEVELNORD in Saint Amand

Wednesday 16 July and Thursday 17 July, 13.00 – 18.00

group of 20 persons maximum


Sevelnord is a factory where more than a hundred thousand vehicles are assembled per year, vehicles of different types and brands, private cars and commercial vehicles on a common plateform (Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Lancia...). The visit will start with a movie and continue with the shop where car skeletons are assembled by robots and the mounting shop where cars are fully dressed up to the contact key.

L’Institut d’Electronique de Micro-électronique et de Nanotechnologie has a total staff of about 500 people working together on many scientific fields from nanosciences to instrumentation. Very open to international collaborations, more than 100 foreigner scientists are currently working at IEMN.
The IEMN scientific activity, which covers a large domain going from physics of materials and nanostructures to instrumentation, can be divided into five scientific areas:
- Materials and Nanostructures
- Micro-technology and microsystems
- Micro-, nano -, and opto-electronics
- Circuits and telecommunication systems
- Acoustics

All these activities are performed within joint technological and characterisation facilities where equipment quality is at the best European level.

  • E1- A half day in Bruges

Friday 18 July, 13:30-23:00

75€ / person (min: 50 persons) dinner included




After about one hour driving from Lille to Bruges, you will visit Bruges, on foot, for 2 hours with an English speaking official city guide. Then you will rest a little during the boat round trip of the town on the canals before you can leisure at your convenience up to the dinner at 7:30. It will be served in a typical Flemish restaurant located in the historical part of Bruges (3 courses with welcome drink, wine and water included). The return to Lille is foreseen around 11 pm.








  • E2- From Lille to Roubaix - Visit of the museum of art and industry « la Piscine»

Friday 18 July pm (3 hours bus and walk)

The city of Roubaix (close to Lille) has strongly marked the urban landscape with its surprising architectural forms - from the gigantic factories, the « castles of industry », to the countless working-class homes grouped around small courtyards- This tour will introduce you to Barbieux park, Drapiers row, the Motte Bossut factory (a jewel of industrial architecture), the exceptional decorative character of the Condition Publique and also, the Grand’Place, City Hall and Saint Martin Church. Next, drive into a unique place – a former public swimming pool transformed into a museum of art and industry. This exceptional Art Déco style building was constructed from 1927 to 1932 and is listed as a XXth century historic site. Its pool is now home to sculptures; the showers hold exhibits of decorative arts, and the wings, where the bathtubs were once located, are now covered with a collection of fine art. The former snack bar has become a restaurant and tearoom.



  • E3- A full day in Bruxelles

Capital of the Duchy of Brabant, capital of Belgium and European city. Meeting point of diverse architectural, literary, historical and cultural currents.

From 10:00 to 13:00 A “classical" visit of Bruxelles by coach, is proposed, along which you will discover the city with the help of the official guides Brussels Belgium - G.B.B. by Brussels Tourism. They will describe its history, geography, economy, cultural and social life whilst you discover its architectural and artistic riches.

From 15:00 to 18:00. After a stop for lunch downtown, you will have 3 choices to discover Bruxelles :

  • Choice 1 : Favourite Brussels, capital of the comic strip! (walking tour of 3h) : Too often ignored by the public, mural art is beginning to play an important role in the heart of our city, which is widely recognised as the capital of the Comic Book. This itinerary created by the non-profit Organisation ART MURAL, forms the perfect complement to a visit to the Comic Book Museum, where you will find all your heroes.

  • Choice 2 (by coach, max 15 persons) : the town of "Art Nouveau", with, in particular, the dwelling houses from architects Hankar and Horta ; the beautifull Solvay hotel built by Victor Horta, the Maison Cauchie considered as one of the finest works of Art Nouveau in Bruxelles and the famous Palais Stoclet buit in 1911 by Josef Hoffmann, precursor of the Jugenstil.
  • Choice 3 (on foot, max 20 personns). The old aristocratic district of the Sablon (on foot): the Sablon district came to life in the 14th century and was in full expansion from the 15th century onwards. It is to this period that we owe its superb late Gothic Church of Our Lady of the Sablon. The Grand Sablon, is the heart of the antique dealers’ district The beautiful " Petit Sablon " garden celebrates the great 16th century humanists and the guilds. The rue de la Régence, opened in the 19th century, takes you to the Royal Fine Arts Museums

  • T1- The old Lille (on foot)

You immerse in the charming district of Lille with its attracting architecture, shops, and museums. Strolling along the streets and the squares you discover the patrimony, the history and « art of living » of the town: the Palais Rihour, the Main Square, the Vieille Bourse, the Opéra, the Chambre de Commerce, the Comtesse Museum and the Notre Dame de la Treille Cathedral.





  • T2- Lille from the metro

Wednesday 16 July 2008, 16:00-18:00

8€ / person (Minimum: 15 persons)


You will see the town unthreaded in front of you, from the first metro, fully automatic, in the world. Sometimes underground, sometimes aerial, the VAL will drive you fully secure, to discover the different faces of the town. The train stations have been built in the spirit of their district architecture. Starting from the historic down town you will cross the town to end in the XXIst century.




  • T3 – Lille: The Royal district and Charles de Gaulle birthplace

Thursday 17 July 2008, 10:00-12:30

You will be guided from the historic city centre to the Rue Royal and the XVIIIth century district, with its beautiful mansions built after the arrival of Louis XIV, the “ Sun King”. You will see also the Saint Andrew church. It was in this former Carmes chapel that Charles de Gaulle was baptized in 1890. On Princesse, street you’ll visit another exceptional landmark – the birthplace of Charles de Gaulle, where he supposedly spent the best moments of his life. Here, you’ll discover numerous personal and historic keepsakes.

The Los Caprichos series is composed of 80 prints organised according to three major themes: social satire, love relationships and sorcery. By using these prints to explore the human soul, Goya endowed them with a universal and timeless language.
  • Exhibition Jeanne de Flandre

at Hospice Comtesse Museum.
Exhibition dedicated to Jeanne of Constantinople and, more generally, to the social, political, artistic and cultural life of XII th Flanders and Hainaut.
